Monthly Archives: April 2007

I *know* this line’s mostly filler

I do have a couple of partly-written blog posts on the go, and I’m hoping to get at least one of them up within the next week.  However, meanwhile, I’m posting this because it’s April 30th.  I don’t like letting a whole month go by without posting – it makes my blog archives look untidy.

So, to mark the month, a quick Jamie anecdote:

The other week, as we played in the garden, a drone of machinery was audible in the background.  Not something to which I’d have paid much attention normally, but it intrigued Jamie.  "What funny noise?" he asked repeatedly, in between watering the flower on top of the wall that he had decided needed repeated watering despite my attempts to persuade him that perhaps the many flowers that were growing at ground level and therefore did not require Mummy to hoist him up to them might also appreciate some watering.

I don’t know that I actually managed to provide much of a satisfactory answer to the question, as "Name That Mechanical Gardening Device" was not among the skills I had realised I’d have to master as part of parenthood, but Jamie seemed happy enough with my wild guesses (lawnmower?  Hedge clippers?  Machine that goes bzzzzzz?)  We were destined never to know for sure what the Funny Noise was, but, whatever it was, it wasn’t any more by the time we next went out into the garden a few days later.  Jamie noticed its absence straight away.

"Where funny noise?" he inquired.

"I don’t know, little one!  I guess the man isn’t working on his garden right now."  (Yes, I have a horrible feeling I actually said that.  Somebody summon the shade of Betty Friedan to slap me upside the head.)

Jamie considered this gravely for a few minutes.  "Funny noise not working," he concluded, as he bent to water the flower again.

Well, that’s one way to put it…
